The Burning Philosophical Center

What does Burning Man have to offer questions about art and economics?  Contemporary ritual practices?  Artificial intelligence?

Caveat Magister interviews leading thinkers, in and out of the Burning Man community, to explore the way in which Burning Man culture interacts with larger intellectual and cultural issues.

Tune in every other Friday evening at 5:00 pm PT (with a rebroadcast on alternating Sundays at 8:00 am PT/5:00 pm CEST as we bring you this series of talks. Check the program schedule for exact dates.

A member of the Burning Man Project’s Philosophical Center, and close collaborator with Larry Harvey, Caveat is the author of “The Scene That Became Cities:  what Burning Man philosophy can teach about building better communities” (to be published June 25, 2019, Penguin Random House).

Caveat served as the Volunteer Coordinator for Media Mecca from 2008 – 2013, the lead writer/researcher for Burning Man’s education program from 2016 – 2018, and has been hanging around BMIR pestering people for goddam ever.  He is the author of the short story collection A Guide to Bars and Nightlife in the Sacred City, which has nothing to do with Burning Man, and the novel The Deeds of Pounce, which is about goblins. He has finally got his email address caveat (at) burningman (dot) org working again. He tweets, occasionally, as @BenjaminWachs

Will Roger Peterson on Fly Ranch – Available for On-Demand listening on SoundCloud

The Burning Man Project purchased the Fly Ranch property in 2016. Located twenty-one miles north of Gerlach in Washoe County, Nevada, Fly Ranch is a year-round venue for Burning Man activities. This 3,800 acre site opens the door to new possibilities, exciting cultural experiments, and art and innovation projects on a scale never before envisioned

Shouting Fire DJ Raindog visited the ranch last weekend as part of the Profiles in Dust team; a small group of talented video producers gifting their time & professional talents to the Burning Man community. Raindog will be presenting a montage of audio recorded there. This will include part of a talk by Burning Man Project founding member, Will Roger, who talks of the history of Burning Man’s involvement with Fly Ranch, and the present and future plans for the property.

While Fly Ranch Project is not exactly British, it definitely is the dogs bollocks.

Can’t carve the time out of your schedule to listen? No worries, you can listen now. The file is on our Soundcloud page for on-demand listening.

Our simulcast from Burning Flipside has concluded. Thank you to the KFLIP-FM Crew. Hope you had a great burn!.

“Burning Flipside is a Texas regional art and music festival inspired by Burning Man. It is a place for radical self expression and an experiment in temporary community building. It is a place of acceptance, inclusiveness, and respect. It is organized entirely by volunteers. The art and entertainment is created solely by participants. There are no spectators. There are no concession stands. No cash transactions are permitted at Flipside. Even bartering is discouraged. This is a sincere experiment in creating a gift economy. If you need something, ask for it. If you have it, gift it! This is a Leave No Trace event. There are no garbage cans. Participants pack out their garbage. Personal responsibility is key. It is a private event created entirely by volunteers.” https://www.burningflipside.com/event
